Foundation stone was laid for 19 cancer hospitals on 18 June 2018, which will be established in public-private partnership in Assam. The hospitals will be set up jointly by the state government and Tata Group.
Apart from this, Cancer Grid will be formed jointly by the state government and Tata Group under which the new hospitals will be set up.
The hospitals will provide treatment to patients of all South-East Asian countries apart from Assam and the other Northeastern states.
The Cancer Grid foundation will be set up with a 50:50 partnership of the government of Assam and Tata Trust. It will be set up with an initial capital of Rs 1,910 crore in which Tata Trust will provide Rs 830 crore and the state government will offer Rs 1,080 crore grant.
The cancer treatment will be divided into three layers consisting of L1, L2 and L3 hospitals. L1 hospitals will be at the grassroots level and have facilities of radiation, diagnosis and chemotherapy. L2 hospitals will have facility to conduct surgeries apart from providing radiation.
