On 29 July 2008, Railway Minister,
Mr.Lalu Prasad Yadav laid the foundation stone for a Rs.1,417 crore rail wheel
factory at Bela in Chhapra district of Bihar.
The construction work on the project
is expected to commence soon and the facility is expected to have an annual
capacity of 1,00,000 wheels. The proposed factory will mainly use scrap iron
from railway yards across the country to make wheels using technology from
US-based Griffin.
It is learnt that, the comprehensive
contract for setting up the factory and allied structures has been awarded to
Larsen & Toubro, which competed with Tata Projects and Gammon India to bag the
project.
The project is expected to be
completed by 2010.
