Ms Mamata Banerjee, Union Minister for Railways, on 21 March 2010, laid
foundation stone for a railway passenger coach factory at Kanchrapara in West
Bengal.
The Rs 860-crore project is likely to come up on 151 acre railway land which
remained unused at its Kanchrapara and Halisahar unit. The Union Ministry of
Railways has already invited RFQs for selection of a JV partner for setting up
the factory. The final date of submission of applications is 31 May 2010.
The new unit, which is to be implemented on a PPP model, will be a world
famous state-of-the-art coach factory for EMU and MEMU. Coaches for the Metro
Railways will also be built up in the Kanchrapara factory.
Once operational, the factory is expected to supply 500 EMU and metro coaches
over a period of 10 years.
