On 19 January 2014, Sunita Laxma Reddy, Minister of government of Andhra Pradesh, and Vijaya Shanthi, Member of Parliament, laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new railway line between Medak and Akkannapet in Hyderabad.
The new railway line between Medak and Akkannapet, stretching 17.2 km, was sanctioned in the 2012 railway budget, and will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 129.3 crore.
The project has been undertaken by the South Central railway and is scheduled to be completed by 2016.
The Andhra Pradesh government has agreed to share 50 per cent of the project cost and will also provide land free of cost.
