Gujarat Council of Science City (GCSC) is in talks with
various corporates, viz. Tatas, Reliance and Larsen & Toubro to set up
theme pavilions in the Rs.366 crore Science City coming up over 108 hectares of
land at Gandhinagar in Gujarat. Each of these pavilions is expected to cost
around Rs.10-Rs.15 crore.
The first phase of the project is
expected to be ready by 2001 with an investment of Rs.66 crore. This phase
would comprise an IMAX theatre, four science-based theme pavilions on IT,
environment and ecology, universe and basic sciences. It would also have a
theme garden, earth station and an outdoor science and a defence park. GCSC has
already tied up with the Canada based IMAX Corporation for the 3D IMAX theatre
with a seating capacity for 500 people.
On completion, the Science City
would have pavilions depicting the universe, evolution, planet earth,
environment and ecology, health, agriculture, biotechnology, physics, chemistry
material and structures, mathematics, energy, transportation, industries,
electronics, communications and information technology. The project also
envisages a 10 MW substation for which an agreement has already been signed
with the Gujarat Electricity Board.
The project has received funds
from various sources including Rs.10 crore from the Centre, Rs.30 crore from the
state government, Rs.10 crore from the Gujarat Maritime Board and Rs.5 crore from
the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation.
