Gurugram Metro Rail (GMRL) has proposed designing the Sector-56 to Pachgaon Metro corridor as a double-decker viaduct on the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR).
The innovative design aims to address congestion, land wastage, and structural duplication by combining an elevated metro line and road, both resting on common piers. This model has been successfully implemented in cities like Nagpur, Jaipur, and Bengaluru, optimising space, reducing construction costs, and minimising foundation needs. A senior GMRL official emphasised that the integrated design would lower costs and improve efficiency.
Currently, the detailed project report (DPR) for the Metro corridor is under preparation and awaits state government approval. The proposal also addresses the challenge of two overlapping mobility projects on the same stretch, ensuring the Metro and road are built as a unified structure to avoid long-term constraints like visual congestion and compromised infrastructure.
