General Motors is planning to set up a new unit
to manufacture small cars under the brand, "Chevrolet Spark". With a capacity of
1.5-2.0 lakh cars per year, the project is estimated to cost Rs.2,000-2,500
crore.
The company has shortlisted sites in Tamil Nadu
and Maharashtra for the project. The location would be finalized within 15
days.
GM earlier had plans to expand its existing
facility at Halol in Gujarat to accommodate the small car project but finally
arrived at a plan of setting up a greenfield facility for small cars.
Chevrolet has globally launched Spark under three
variants -- L, LS & LT. In China, Spark is sold as Buick.
