Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy R K Singh has stated that the government is planning to introduce another production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for batteries to reduce cost.
As per the PLI scheme for storage, the price of batteries will be reduced only if the volume increases and foster the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India to enable smooth energy transition. In May 2021, the Central government granted its approval to the PLI scheme for manufacturing advanced chemistry cell (ACC) batteries with an estimated investment of Rs 18,100 crore.
With this, the government intends to attract foreign and domestic investment of Rs 45,000 crore. The scheme targets to achieve manufacturing of 50 GW of battery storage. This transition to EVs will reduce emissions in the country.
The ACCs are the new generation of advanced storage technologies, which allow storing electric energy as electrochemical or chemical energy and converting it back to electric energy when required.
