The government of India plans to set up five new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) with the assistance of foreign countries.
In Goa, the proposed IIT will come up in association with established institutions in the United States. This plan will be finalised once India and the United States sign a joint declaration of intent. The HRD minister will travel to America with the prime minister to sign a joint declaration, scheduled later this month.
For the remaining proposed premier engineering schools in J&K, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, the partner countries will also be identified soon.
At present, there are 13 IITs, from which eight have been set up between the period of 2008 and 2011, under the mentorship of the existing institutes during the second term of the Congress-led UPA government.
