The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has announced plans to improve 346 roads across 14 zones in the city at an estimated cost of Rs 92.74 crore under the Special Fund for 2025–26.
The project, aimed at upgrading both interior and bus route roads, will include work on roads made of cement concrete, bituminous tar, and interlocking pavers. According to officials from the GCC’s Bus Route Roads Department, the roadworks have been divided into 21 packages to streamline execution and avoid delays that could arise from assigning entire zones to single contractors.
Tenders have already been floated, and the work orders are expected to be issued by the end of May. For instance, Package-1 will cover 24 roads in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Royapuram. Package-2 and Package-3 include multiple roads across zones such as Anna Nagar and Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, each valued at approx. Rs 4.35 crore and ?4.53 crore respectively.
The project is part of a broader effort by the GCC to enhance urban infrastructure and improve commuter experience across the city.
