Hindustan Construction Co on 8 August
2006 announced the winning of a Rs.248 crore contract associated with NTPC's
upcoming Loharinag Pala hydropower project in Uttaranchal. The contract,
involving construction of a barrage and de-silting chamber, is expected to be
executed within 40 months.
NTPC in August 2005 invited bids
(international competitive mode) for the above package. Bidding closed on 2
December 2005 after an extension in the original closing date of 18 October
2005. Bids for the hydro-mechanical package, invited in February 2006, are yet
to be finalized.
The Loharinag Pala envisages setting
up of 600 MW (4x150 MW) hydropower plant across River Bhagirathi, a tributary of
river Ganga, in Uttarkashi district of Uttaranchal. Located about 190 km from
Rishikesh, the project is estimated to cost Rs.2,418 crore. The project is
estimated to generate 2,508 million kwh of electricity in a 90 per cent
dependable year.
