Mumbai-based Housing Development &
Infrastructure (HDIL) received a letter of intent (LoI) from Mumbai International
Airport for resettlement and rehabilitation of Chhatrapati Shivaji International
Airport slums, spread over an area of 276 acres.
The eligibility criteria for selection
was laid down in consultation with the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development
Authority (MMRDA), the project implementing agency.
The rehabilitation requirement is
about 200 acres, of which HDIL will be offered a portion to resettle about
80,000 slum households and the rest will come from the government and other
agencies.
Instead, of the total 2,000 acres of
Mumbai airport land, 10 per cent (200 acres) has been allotted to MIAL for
commercial development, and HDIL will get part of it as transferable
development right. As part of the agreement, the developer will not get any
financial compensation from MIAL.
The slum rehabilitation process will
be undertaken in a phased manner between 18 and 48 months.
