Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for infrastructure projects worth Rs 4,900 crore across Tamil Nadu on 26 July, 2025, in Thoothukudi.
Key among these was the new 17,340 sq. mtrs. terminal at Thoothukudi Airport, built in Chettinad-style architecture. The airport now boasts an extended 3,115-mtrs. runway, 21 check-in counters, three aerobridges, 644 seats, and baggage and safety facilities, increasing passenger handling capacity from 156 to 1,400 per hour.
PM Modi also launched a 306-meter north cargo berth at VOC Port in Thoothukudi at a cost of Rs 285 crore, enabling the port to handle large vessels and create 800 work opportunities, including 300 directly, and 500 indirectly generated. The 50 km four-lane Sethiyathoppu–Chozhapuram highway at Rs 2,357 crore, and the upgraded six-lane road to VOC Port worth Rs 200 crore were also inaugurated.
Additionally, railway projects worth Rs 1,032 crore covering the Nagercoil and Tirunelveli regions, and the ?548 crore interstate transmission system for evacuating 2,000 MW from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant were dedicated.
