The Karnataka government has identified seven potential sites for the proposed second international airport in Bengaluru. This development came about after a high-level meeting was organised, co-chaired by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Industries Minister MB Patil.
The seven locations selected for the new airport include Harohalli and Dobbaspet, situated approx.50-60 km from Bengaluru. Additionally, five other sites have been shortlisted near Tumakuru, near Koratagere, near Kunigal, near Huliyurdurga, and Malavalli, based on evaluations and consultations with stakeholders. About 4,000 acres of land will be required for the airport project.
As a next step, the proposal will be forwarded to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for further evaluation. During the meeting, presentations from consulting firms Idec and the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) were reviewed.
AAI officials will visit these sites to assess their feasibility. MB Patil emphasised that the selection of the final location will be based on several critical factors, including passenger density, connectivity, cargo potential and environmental considerations. The decision will adhere to around 15 parameters established by the AAI.
