Hindalco Industries, the metals flagship of the Aditya Birla Group and a global aluminium leader, has successfully delivered 10,000 aluminium battery enclosures to Mahindra for its next-generation e-SUVs - BE 6 and XUV 9e. This development marks a major milestone in India’s electric mobility transformation, with both companies advancing domestic innovation and reducing reliance on imports.
The enclosures were produced at Hindalco’s newly inaugurated EV component manufacturing facility in Chakan, Pune. Developed with an investment of Rs 500 crore, the facility spans five acres and is equipped to produce 80,000 enclosures annually, with plans to scale to 1,60,000. The aluminium enclosures are co-developed with Mahindra and deliver up to 40 percent weight reduction compared to steel, enhancing crash safety, thermal management, and extending vehicle range by eight to 10 percent.
Over 3,000 Mahindra EVs already feature these components on Indian roads. Made with low-carbon aluminium, the enclosures underscore Hindalco’s sustainability focus. The plant will also generate up to 1,000 employment opportunities, significantly contributing to the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. A standout feature is its gender-diverse workforce, with nearly 100 pecent women machine operators.
