Rio Tinto has announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India-based AMG Metals & Materials (AMG M&M) to evaluate the feasibility of a large-scale, low-carbon aluminium project in India.
The proposed development envisions up to one million tonne per annum (MTPA) of primary aluminium smelting and two MTPA of alumina production, powered entirely by renewable wind and solar energy, complemented by pumped hydro storage solutions. The first phase of the project will assess the viability of establishing a 5,00,000 tonne per annum primary aluminium smelter at a “favourable” site in India.
As part of the agreement, AMG M&M will evaluate a firmed renewable energy solution in partnership with Greenko, while Rio Tinto will focus on identifying a commercially viable alumina solution. Both companies are now engaged in technical and commercial assessments to determine the viability and potential impact of the proposed facilities.
If realised, the project could contribute significantly to global efforts aimed at reducing carbon emissions from industrial production, while also supporting India's clean energy and economic development goals.
