On 29 December 2013, Mallikarjun Kharge, minister of railways, inaugurated the 37.2 km Humnabad-Khanapur railway line in Khanapur, Karnataka.
Also, a diesel-electric multiple units (DEMU) passenger special train from Humnabad to Bidar was also commissioned on the same day.
Besides, a railway pit line will soon be constructed at Khanapur of Bhalki taluk in Bidar district at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore, and the project is likely to be inaugurated in January 2014.
Around Rs 200 crore was spent on a new railway line between Khanapur and Humanabad (part of the Bidar-Gulbarga rail line project) and Rs 18 crore for the Bidar-Humanabad DEMU train. The revamp of Bhalki railway station is estimated to cost Rs 50 lakh.
The remaining railway line between Humanabad and Gulbarga is estimated to be completed by 2016 by the South Central railway.
