As part of efforts to boost natural gas availability across the country, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved approx. 34,233 km of pipeline network, including common carriers, spur lines, and dedicated pipelines.
As of June 2025, 25,429 km of these pipelines are operational, while 10,459 km are under construction. PNGRB is responsible for granting authorisation to entities for the laying, building, operating, and expanding of Natural Gas Pipelines (NGPL) in India The Government has been taking various initiatives to realise the ‘One Nation, One Gas Grid’ vision, such as approving trunk pipelines, offering viability gap funding for low-demand areas, and promoting the development of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals. Programs like the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) initiative also promote Bio-CNG.
Government collaboration with state authorities and agencies ensures ongoing construction progress. The expansion of gas pipelines improves access to clean and affordable energy, supporting rural and industrial growth, while also fostering job creation, reducing air pollution, and boosting environmental sustainability.
