India has made significant progress in expanding its renewable energy infrastructure, with 48 GW of inter-state transmission system (ISTS) capacity already installed for evacuating solar and wind power. Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik informed the Rajya Sabha that 159 GW of ISTS is currently under construction.

The government has planned a total of 340 GW of ISTS to facilitate the evacuation of 230 GW of renewable energy connected to the national grid. Naik stated, "As of now, out of the total planned capacity, 48 GW has been completed, 159 GW is under construction, 21 GW is under bidding, and 112 GW is under planning." Additionally, intra-state transmission systems (InSTS) are being strengthened through Green Energy Corridor (GEC) schemes.

The GEC-I scheme, implemented in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, and Maharashtra, involves an investment of Rs 10,141.68 crore.

The GEC-II scheme, covering Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, is being executed at a cost of Rs 12,031.33 crore. In June 2025, India’s peak power demand reached 2,43,118 MW, while the peak demand met was 2,42,493 MW, showing a shortfall of 625 MW.
