Indian Railways has made significant progress in modernising its track infrastructure and enhancing safety standards over the past eleven years.
In the financial year 2024–25, it carried out track renewal across 6,851 track km, with plans to renew over 7,500 kilometres in 2025–26 and 7,900 kilometres in 2026–27. This work highlights the focus on asset reliability and safety. Additionally, the renewal of turnouts has improved train movement, with more than 8,000 thick web switches and over 3,000 Weldable CMS crossings being installed. mechanised deep screening of ballast, essential for track stability, was completed over 7,500 track kilometres in 2025–26.
Indian Railways has also expanded its fleet of track machines, procuring over 1,100 since 2014, for more efficient maintenance. Safety measures, including 15,000 kilometres of track fencing, have been implemented to reduce accidents. These efforts have led to a substantial increase in tracks capable of supporting speeds of 110 kmph and above, from 40 percent of the network in 2014 to 80% today.
