India’s largest greenfield domestic cargo terminal (DCT) in terms of designed capacity was inaugurated at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru on 27 February, 2025. Operated by Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) in collaboration with Menzies Aviation, the new facility aims to enhance domestic cargo handling capabilities.
Spanning over seven acres, the terminal has a peak handling capacity of 3,60,000 tonne, with potential expansion to 4,00,000 tonne. It includes 42 truck docks, over 400 cargo bins, conveyors with integrated X-ray machines, and 30 unit load device (ULD) build-up and breakdown stations. Additionally, it features 40 handheld terminals and self-service kiosks for agents, streamlining operations. With real-time shipment tracking, data analytics tools, and barcode and QR code-based communication, the terminal aims to improve data exchange with airline systems, reduce turnaround times, and enhance efficiency.
A key export hub for perishable goods like mangoes and coriander, Bengaluru airport is expanding its capabilities to handle specialised cargo, including valuables, live animals, dangerous goods, and radioactive materials.
Designed in compliance with Indian Green Building Council standards, the terminal incorporates sustainability features such as sky lighting, advanced ventilation, water conservation systems, and energy-efficient infrastructure.
