K-RIDE has successfully installed a 31-mtrs.-long single-span precast U-girder, the longest of its kind in India, on the Mallige Line of the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project (BSRP). This milestone, achieved on 17 December, 2024 at Yeshwantpur, is part of the Baiyappanahalli-Chikkabanavara line’s construction.
The U-girder, cast in January 2024 at Gollahalli, is a vital component for the elevated railway system. The installation process utilised two high-capacity cranes to ensure precision and safety. K-RIDE plans to install 450 U-girders on the eight-km elevated stretch of the Mallige Line between Hebbal and Yeshwantpur.
Currently, nearly 60 U-girders have been cast at Gollahalli. K-RIDE, a government agency, oversees the execution of the 149-km Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project, aimed at enhancing urban mobility.
“U-girders are U-shaped, pre-tensioned, and precast structures commonly used in rail-based public transport projects. Their design enhances quality and expedites construction by reducing the need for multiple foundations and piers due to their extended length,” an official explained.
