JSW Group, led by Sajjan Jindal, is planning to invest in West Bengal’s only greenfield airport project at Andal, located in Paschim Bardhaman district. This marks the group’s first venture into the airport business. The announcement was made during the eighth edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit in Kolkata.
JSW Infrastructure, a part of the JSW Group, will enter the airport sector by acquiring stakes from private investors in Bengal Aerotropolis Projects (BAPL). Currently, the West Bengal government holds a 26 percent stake in BAPL, while Singapore’s Changi Airports owns 33 percent.
JSW intends for both the state government and Changi Airports to retain their stakes while other private partners may exit.
“We want to develop the whole Aerotropolis township and industrial park there. It’s a very exciting project. The catchment area is very big -- Durgapur, Asansol, Kharagpur, right up to Jharkhand,” Sajjan Jindal said.
Discussions with Changi Airports have already taken place. This strategic move aligns with JSW’s growth plans and reflects its confidence in West Bengal’s economic prospects.
