The Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee, will be
dedicating Gas Authority of India Ltd's (GAIL) Jamnagar-Loni LPG pipeline to
the nation on 9 May 2001. The Rs.1,250 crore, 1,270 km long pipeline is the
world’s largest LPG pipeline.
Presently, the pipeline has a capacity
of 1.7 million tonnes, which would be upgraded to 2.5 million tonnes by 2011 –
2012. LPG transported through the pipeline would be equivalent to five lakh
domestic cylinders per day.
The pipeline, which starts at Jamnagar in Gujarat and terminates at Loni
in Uttar Pradesh, passes through the States of Gujarat (522 kms), Rajasthan
(630 kms), Haryana (75 kms), Delhi (6 kms) and Uttar Pradesh (37 kms).
The pipeline will transport LPG from Reliance Industries’ refinery at
Jamnagar and Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) import location at Kandla to IOC,
Bharat Petroleum Corporation and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation for marketing.
LPG would be evacuated at Ajmer and Jaipur in Rajasthan, Piyala in Haryana,
Madanpur-Khadar in Delhi and Loni in Uttar Pradesh.
