Tata Steel has reportedly decided to scale up the
capacity of its proposed greenfield integrated steel plant in Jharkhand from 10
million tpa to 15 million tpa. The capital outlay of the project would now be
around Rs.60,000 crore.
The plant will come up in phases, the first of
which involving capacity of 5 million tpa, would be completed within four years.
Phase I would see investment of Rs.15,000-20,000 crore.
Consultants, M N Dastoor, are currently
inspecting several sites for the project and have already reviewed locations
like Chandil, Manoharpur, Tenuaghat and Patratu.
The MoU for the project between Tata Steel and
the Jharkhand government is likely to be signed on 8 September 2005.

Tata Steel, on 4 September 2005, clarified
that there was no move to expand the capacity to 15 million tpa as suggested by
the above news item. The company would proceed with the original capacity of 10
million tpa.
