Mumbai’s King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, Mumbai is set for expansion to relieve pressure on the city’s overburdened public healthcare system.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a redevelopment project which will add 500 new beds, increasing the hospital’s capacity to 2,750 beds, making it the largest and one of the most advanced civic-run hospitals in Mumbai.
The project, slated for completion by June 2026, includes a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre, advanced operating theatres, and Mumbai’s first rooftop helipad at a BMC-run hospital. The helipad, part of the 18-storey Shatabdi Tower, will facilitate rapid airlifting of critically ill patients during disasters such as building collapses or train accidents.
Additionally, the project will improve healthcare worker infrastructure with a 32-storey nursing school and hostel featuring podium parking, and a 21-storey residential tower for hospital staff.
