Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal inaugurated the hospital building of the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College in Karnal, on 13 April, 2017.
The medical college, spread over 50 acre of land, has been built at a cost of Rs 646 crore. At present, the hospital has a capacity for 350 beds, which will be increased to 650 beds. This is the only government medical college in North Haryana.
The government plans to set up a medical science university at a cost of about Rs 3,000 crore in Karnal. Medical colleges will also be built in Jind and Bhiwani.
Construction is underway on 710-bed National Cancer Institute in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS-II) at Badhsa village in Jhajjar district. The project, worth Rs 2,000 crore, is likely to be commissioned by July 2018.
The state government will spend Rs 26 crore to improve primary health centres in the state. Obstacles have been cleared for setting up of a medical college by the SGPC at Shahbad.
