The Karnataka government has approved a Rs 391-crore project to restore Byramangala Lake, one of Bengaluru's most polluted water bodies.
The lake has suffered from untreated sewage inflow from the Vrushabhavathi River for decades, severely degrading its water quality. The rejuvenation project will be executed jointly by the Minor Irrigation Department and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). A new sewage treatment plant (STP) will be built near the lake to ensure no untreated sewage flows into it. This STP, which will cost Rs 230 crore, is expected to treat 100 million litres of sewage per day and will be operational within three years.
WSSB Chairperson Ram Prasath Manohar noted that the project is part of the broader Vrushabhavathi Valley initiative, which is already providing treated water to nearby lakes. The project aims to restore Byramangala Lake as a vital water resource and improve the surrounding ecology, benefiting local communities.
