The Kerala Water Authority (KWA) is set to receive approval for its proposed 190-million litres per day (MLD) water treatment plant, which will significantly benefit five Municipalities and 13 Grama Panchayats in the Kochi region.
The Rs 523-crore project, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), aims to address the projected water demand gap by 2050. The areas set to benefit include Kochi Corporation, Aluva, Thrikkakara, Kalamassery, Eloor, Maradu municipalities, and surrounding grama panchayats. The plant, to be constructed in Aluva, will feature advanced technology, including a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to modernise and automate operations. The design also includes dual-media filtration, solar-powered sensors, and flood resilience due to its elevated location.
"The plant will ensure efficient water treatment, precise monitoring, and an uninterrupted supply," said KWA sources. The construction, expected to be completed within 15 months, will help meet the growing water demand, which is expected to reach 478 MLD by 2050.
