Government of Kerala has given its approval for a suburban railway project connecting Thiruvananthapuram with Chengannur, near Kottayam.
The state will develop a total of 110 km corridor for the Mainline Electrical Multiple Units service on these two stretches. In the first phase of the project, Thiruvananthapuram will be linked to Chengannur near Kottayam. The proposed railway line will have high speed trains and there will be 25 stops between Chengannur and Thiruvananthapuram.
The state will form a JV with the Indian Railways for setting up the project as well as with Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) to conduct a detailed feasibility study.
Meanwhile, the cabinet has also given administrative approval to implement road renovation projects with an estimated cost of Rs 433 crore.
