The proposed extension of Kochi Metro from Aluva to Angamaly via Kochi airport has entered a decisive stage with Haryana-based Systra MVA Consulting India starting work on the detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 3.
Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) has directed the consultant to submit the DPR within six months at a cost of Rs 1.03 crore. According to KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera, this long-pending project will enhance world-class travel facilities and spur regional development. The Phase 3 plan includes a 17.5-km elevated metro viaduct, along with nearly three kms of underground alignment. DPR preparation will involve detailed surveys, engineering studies, and field investigations.
Funding for the DPR is being supported through the Central Financial Assistance Scheme of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The consultant selection faced delays earlier, as RITES, the initial frontrunner, was disqualified due to budgetary issues, prompting a re-tendering before Systra MVA was finalised.
