Kolkata Metro successfully conducted its first trial run on the 2.63 km Sealdah-Esplanade stretch of the East-West Metro corridor on 21 January, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in the development of Kolkata's metro network.
The trial run took place along the west-bound tunnel of the Green Line. The trial began at Sealdah Metro station at 11:20 am and reached Esplanade Metro station at 11:31 am.
This stretch will play a vital role in easing commuting for passengers traveling between Sealdah and Howrah railway stations, as well as other key locations in Kolkata. The Esplanade underground metro station will serve as an important interchange hub for commuters. Once fully operational, the East-West Metro corridor, spanning 16 km from Howrah Maidan to Sector V, is expected to be completed later in 2025.
Currently, East-West Metro trains are running on the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade and Sealdah-Sector V stretches. The trial run's success marks a crucial step forward in expanding the city’s metro system, contributing to improved urban mobility for residents.
