Lafarge India, a subsidiary of the
Paris-based Lafarge Group, is planning capacity expansion at its Sonadih cement
unit from 1.5 million tpa to 3.5 million tpa in Raipur district of Chhattisgarh.
The project will entail an investment of Rs.700 crore ($156 million)
The state government and the company
is expected to sign an MoU by mid-May 2006. The government will provide all
support to Lafarge for its expansion in Chhattisgarh with the latest
technologies because it will create more jobs in the state.
Lafarge, which commenced operations in
India in 1999 by acquiring Tata Steel's cement unit in Jharkhand, has a total
cement capacity
of 5 million tpa in India from three plants spread over Chhattisgarh and
Jharkhand.
