The Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) in Tambaram is set to undergo a significant infrastructure upgrade with a Rs 500-crore investment over two years.
The project aims to enhance core infrastructure, including a 17 km underground duct system featuring separate lines for effluent, sewage, drinking water, industrial water, optical fiber cables (OFC), and gas. A tender for this initiative will soon be issued.
Development Commissioner Alex Paul Menon emphasised the installation of a comprehensive surveillance system by March-end. A major focus is on sustainability, with plans to cover all rooftops with solar panels to generate 20-24 MW of power, aiming to distribute solar energy across the zone. “Our vision is to make MEPZ a zero-carbon campus by 2030,” he stated.
New buildings will adhere to strict environmental norms, while older units will be encouraged to comply. This initiative aligns with global environment, social, and governance (ESG) standards, which are increasingly stringent, particularly in Europe.
The zone has also committed to efficient solid waste and sewage treatment systems, with measurable actions being implemented. This plan underlines MEPZ’s commitment to sustainability, aligning with global trends and enhancing its competitiveness for businesses with international clients.
