Mahan Coal, a JV company of Essar Power and Hindalco Industries, has received Stage-II forest clearance for its Mahan coal block, from the Ministry of Environment & Forests (MoEF).
The green nod is subject to fulfilment of some further conditions. One of these conditions stated that Mahan Coal would now be required to sign a mining lease agreement with the Madhya Pradesh government before commencing mining operations.
The block, located in Madhya Pradesh, was allotted to Essar Power in 2006, for its 1,200 MW (2 x 600 MW) pithead coal-based power unit in Sidhi district.
The Mahan coal block had received in-principle approval (Stage-I) from MoEF in 2012. The approval came with 36 conditions that required a range of studies to be completed and several processes under Forest Rights Act complied with.
