The Meghalaya Energy Corporation (MeECL) is now preparing the detailed project report (DPR) of Stage-II of the Myntdu-Leshka Hydro Electric project (MLHEP).
The DPR will be ready by December 2015. It is projected that the construction of the MLHEP’s second unit will be cheap as most of the infrastructure for the new stage is already available at the site.
MLHEP’s second unit will consist of four units with a capacity of 70 MW each and is expected to generate 280 MW of power. After commissioning of the unit, it will meet Meghalaya’s growing power concerns.
Once the environmental clearance is granted to Stage-II of the project, the land acquisition process will commence. The execution of Stage-I of the ambitious Myntdu-Leshka Hydro Electric project was successful.
Meanwhile, the state government is also in the process of obtaining environmental clearance from the union government for the proposed 240 MW Umngot Power project which is likely to be handed over to Jaypee Group.
The estimated cost of the Umngot project will be around Rs 1,700 crore and will cover an area of 390 ha straddling both, West Jaintia Hills and East Khasi Hills districts.
