The Rs 19.5 billion electrification of the 132 km Meerut–Nazibabad railway section has been completed, marking a significant step in strengthening northern India’s rail network.
The upgrade will enable faster, more reliable train services, improving operational efficiency while reducing travel time and fuel costs. According to the Ministry of Railways, electrification will lower emissions, aligning with the government’s target of achieving 100 percent railway electrification nationwide. The improved section will also accommodate higher freight capacity, supporting industries and trade across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Officials expect enhanced connectivity to stimulate economic growth and regional development along the corridor.
Part of the broader mission to modernise India’s rail infrastructure, the project will benefit both passenger and freight operations, improving service reliability and sustainability. The electrified section is also expected to contribute to cost savings and environmental benefits, strengthening India’s transition towards a cleaner, more energy-efficient railway network.
