The Ahmedabad Metro is set to expand with a Rs 2,000 crore project which involves constructing a 6-7 km elevated circular metro loop within GIFT City as part of Phase-2B of the metro development. This will enhance connectivity for the 28,000 employees working at the 800-acre GIFT City campus.
This project will add four to six metro stations connecting commercial, residential, and public areas within the campus. Currently, the Phase-2 Ahmedabad Metro terminates at the GIFT City station on the campus periphery. Most employees commute via private vehicles or buses, as the campus lies 25 km from Ahmedabad and 15 km from Gandhinagar.
The Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) has submitted the proposal to the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The finalisation of the detailed project report (DPR) will determine the exact route, number of stations, and cost. Notably, the plan revives a 2018 proposal which initially included a six-km route and three stations within GIFT City. Ahmedabad Metro connectivity to GIFT City was inaugurated in September 2024, marking the completion of Phase-2.
Besides this, GMRC has also proposed a Rs 1,800 crore extension connecting Ahmedabad Metro to the international airport. This integrated expansion aims to boost public transport options with reduced reliance on private vehicles for commuters.
