The Ministry of Power convened a high-level Consultative Committee meeting on 04 August, 2025, chaired by Union Minister of Power and Housing Affairs Manohar Lal, to deliberate on India’s energy storage roadmap and future energy security.
Attended by Ministers, MPs, senior officials, CPSUs, and Central Electricity Authority experts, the meeting focused on addressing renewable energy (RE) variability, improving grid stability, and enabling peak shifting. The Minister reaffirmed India’s pledge to cut GDP emissions intensity by 45 percent by 2030 from 2005 levels and target 50 percent installed capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030. He stressed coupling RE with energy storage to ensure reliable supply.
India’s flagship battery energy storage systems (BESS) programme, among the world’s largest, aims for 43 GWh capacity under the Rs 9,160 crore Viability Gap Funding scheme, with ISTS charges waived for eligible BESS and Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) projects. India currently has 6.4 GW PSP capacity, eight GW under construction, and 61 GW in planning, with potential exceeding 200 GW. The roadmap underscores resource adequacy and robust capacity tie-ups for sustainable power security.
