The MoEF has accorded clearance to the Jaitapur nuclear power project in
Maharashtra.
The ministry on 28 November 2010 gave clearance for NPCIL's proposed 10,000
MWe nuclear based power plant at Jaitapur in Ratnagiri district of the state.
While approving the project, the MoEF has prescribed 35 stringent conditions and
safeguards, of which 23 specific conditions will have to be met within a year's
time. These include the preparation of a comprehensive biodiversity conservation
plan, with Bombay Natural History Society and state forest department, to
maintain health of 150 ha of mangroves in the area.
The MoEF had, in October 2009, given in-principle approval for setting up six
units of 1,650 MWe each at Jaitapur, over 15 to 18 years.
