Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) has sought Rs 1,300 crore from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways for the redevelopment of Berth 9 and deepening the navigational channel leading to the port.
This includes a Rs 750 crore proposal for modernising a 350-mtrs. multi-cargo facility at Berth 9, which remains the only berth at the port yet to be privatised. MPA Chairman N Vinodkumar expressed confidence in securing the necessary funding from the government. "We expect the government of India to approve the proposal and provide the required funds," he said.
In addition to the redevelopment, MPA plans to submit a proposal for capital dredging of the approach channel, aiming to deepen it from the current 14.4 mtrs. to 19.8 mtrs., enabling the port to accommodate larger capesize vessels. This will enhance cargo capacity, reduce logistics costs, and substantially lower carbon emissions.
