Mumbai is likely to get its first marina at Princess Dock. The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has recommended building the marina as part of the port makeover plan.
Earlier, the Maharashtra Maritime Board had planned a marina between the Gateway of India and Western Naval Command, and later between Apollo Bunder and the Gateway of India. The plans were shelved following objections from the navy on security grounds.
The Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) has planned a 300 yacht marina project in a public-private partnership. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 380 crore. The tender will be called in a month.
MCZMA cleared the proposal at a meeting held on 10 October 2019.
Earlier there was a plan for reconstruction of the offshore container terminal at Princess Dock, following clearance by the Ministry of Environment and Forests in 2006. The reclamation work was also started and completed in 2015-16, with a few pockets not fully reclaimed.
The offshore container project has been shelved and the reclaimed area will be excavated. The marina project envisages excavation of the reclaimed area of about 2.5 lakh cu mtr. The excavated earth will be sent to Jawahar Dweep, where MbPT has another project that requires reclamation.
The marina will be located between the domestic cruise terminal and RoRo Pax terminal. The total area of the marina will be 8.02 ha which will include the basin, spanning 5.20 ha. It will also have a walkway and a yacht repair and maintenance unit.
Apart from this, MbPT will also build a marina hospitality centre, depots for equipment, and waste oil and battery recycle centres.
