On 6 December, 2016, the board of National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) approved the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Rapid Rail Transit System (RRTS) corridor.
The estimated cost of the 92.05 km long project is Rs 21,902 crore. The project is expected to be operational by 2024.
The proposed corridor will reduce travel time between Delhi and Meerut by at least 48 minutes.
Of the total length, 30.245 km will be underground, 60.354 km will be elevated viaduct, and 1.451 km will be at grade for connections to two depots at Duhai and Modipuram. A total of 17 stations, including six underground and 11 elevated stations will be constructed.
The Sahibabad-Meerut South section, including Duhai Depot, stretching 38.05 km is likely to become operational by January 2023, while Sarai Kale Khan-Sahibabad of 16.60 km will be operational in January 2024. The remaining Meerut South- Modipuram section stretching 37.40 km is expected to be operational in July 2024.
The NCRTC board will also take up the Road Transport Ministry’s realignment project of Delhi-Sonepat-Panipat and Delhi-Rewari-Alwar RRTC corridors to run them along NH-1 and NH-8 respectively.
