Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), Dubai’s DP World, and Poland-based Nevomo Group BV have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore India’s first autonomous magnetic rail freight movement project.
The partnership will deploy Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology for the self-propelled movement of rail-based cargo and freight within existing port infrastructure. The pilot will involve a 750-mtrs. MagRail track at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat. The project aims to use autonomous, electric-powered wagons equipped with linear motor technology to move containerised and bulk cargo, significantly enhancing capacity, speed, and efficiency. The initiative is also expected to reduce logistics costs and CO2 emissions, making freight operations greener and more sustainable.
“This collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure, enhancing capacity and operational efficiency to support growing cargo demands,” said Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman, Deendayal Port Authority. Deendayal Port was selected for the pilot as DP World is already developing a Rs 4,243.64 crore container terminal at Tuna Tekra, a satellite port facility. The collaboration is set to establish new benchmarks for port-hinterland connectivity, driving innovation and global trade competitiveness.
