The North Eastern Electric Power
Corporation Limited (Neepco) has decided to build two medium sized hydel power
projects in Manipur, where the power giant has been facing stiff opposition over
the Tipaimukh project. To be set up in Tamenglong district, the twin projects
will not only supplement the power generated by Tipaimukh dam but will also help
Neepco get rid of its "anti-Manipur"image.
The power projects will come up at
Pabran and Khongnemchaka on the Barak river. The river, which springs in
Nagaland, flows through Manipur and south Assam and terminates in Bangladesh.
While the Pabran project will churn out 190 MW of hydel power, the other one at
Khongnemchaka will generate 69 MW. Barak's natural upstream flow will be used to
produce power.
The Central Electricity Authority has
already compiled a feasibility report for the projects with the help of the
Water and Power Consultative Services, a Delhi-based consultancy service.
