National Highways Authority of India,
on 6 December 2006, awarded three highway development contracts under NHDP-Phase
III-A. The stretches aggregating 206 km are spread over Chhattisgarh,
Maharashtra and Punjab.
The projects will be developed on BOT
basis with a concession period of 20 years including construction time of thirty
months.
The details of the contracts are as
follows:
So far, under NHDP Phase III A, a
total of 21 contracts spanning around 1,326 km have been awarded.
Backgrounder: In March 2005, the
Centre approved upgradation and four-laning of 4,000 km of National Highways on
BOT basis under NHDP Phase-IIIA at an estimated cost of Rs.22,000 crore (2004
prices). The Government also approved preparation of DPRs for another 6,000 km
under another sub-phase NHDP-Phase IIIB, taking the total to 10, 000 km under
this Phase.
The objective of NHDP-Phase III is to
4-lane high density traffic corridors not covered by NHDP Phase-I (mainly the
Golden Quadrilateral) and NHDP Phase-II (North-South and East-West corridors),
connect state capitals with Phase I and Phase II and link centers of tourism and
places of economic importance.
