NHPC is set to more than double its installed capacity in the next four to five years to around 15,000 MW. The company is working on 16 projects totalling 10,692 MW. Of these, nine are hydro projects having a capacity of 9,314 MW, and seven are solar projects with 1,378 MW capacity. Out of the nine hydro projects, NHPC will commission eight by FY29 with a capacity of 6,434 MW.

Through the central public sector undertaking scheme for renewable energy, the company has diversified into solar power projects, and is going to soon commission its own solar projects totalling around 1,378 MW with another 1,545 MW in the pipeline will see commissioning in the next four to five years. Of the projects in the pipeline, one is a 300 MW floating solar project in Odisha.

In pumped hydro storage projects, the power developer has a portfolio of 11,240 MW of pumped storage projects (PSPs) in Andhra, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tripura. Of the total PSPs, three totalling 4,350 MW are in the pre feasibility stage, four with 4,390 MW capacity are in detailed project report (DPR) preparation stage and three projects of 2,500 MW are where PFR has been submitted. The company has recently received the Navratna status.

The Cabinet last month approved the Ministry of Power's proposal for central financial assistance to the northeastern states for up to 24 percent equity stake in hydro power projects to be developed through a joint venture with the Centre. The scheme with outlay of Rs 4,136 crore is to be implemented between FY25 and FY32.
