NHPC has announced that Unit-2 of the Subansiri Lower hydro electric project, with a capacity of 250 MW, is expected to begin commercial power supply in December 2025.
The company said test synchronisation of Unit-2 with the national grid was successfully completed on December 2, marking a key milestone toward commercial operations. The Subansiri Lower project has a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW and is designed as a run-of-the-river scheme with a small pondage on the Subansiri River. Located near North Lakhimpur on the border of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the project is strategically important for strengthening power supply in the Northeast. The nearest railheads are Gogamukh and North Lakhimpur, while Lilabari and Dibrugarh serve as the closest airports.
Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate about 7,421.59 million units of electricity annually in a 90 per cent dependable year, contributing significantly to clean energy generation.
