NMDC has launched mining operations at its Tokisud North Coal Mine in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand on 23 January, 2026.
This marks a significant step in the company’s foray into the coal sector. The mine, located in the Barkagaon Block, has an annual production capacity of 2.30 million tonne of thermal coal. This output is expected to help strengthen domestic coal supply and meet India’s increasing energy demands. While the commencement of mining activities has been announced, NMDC has stated that the date for the beginning of commercial production will be disclosed once the mining operations are stabilized and necessary statutory processes are completed.
The launch of the Tokisud North mine aligns with NMDC’s strategy to diversify beyond iron ore and play a crucial role in India’s energy security, focusing on responsible and sustainable resource development.
