NTPC is planning to set up a separate coal mining division to secure fuel supplies to run its thermal power plants.
The plan is to create a division only for coal mining within NTPC. The company has 10 captive coal blocks, but has not been able to make them operational. NTPC has a capacity to generate 41,684 MW of electricity with 15 coal-fuelled projects. Of its annual requirement of 160 million tonne of coal, NTPC imports around 16 million tonne. The balance comes from state-run miners such as CIL and Singareni Collieries Co.
The proposed plan is under consideration. The size of the new division is yet to be finalised.
Besides, the company is looking at timed exits from its other joint ventures - NTPC-Alstom Power Services; BF-NTPC Energy Systems; and NTPC-Telk, a tie-up with Transformers and Electricals Kerala.
